How to Overcome Prescription drug addiction and stop drug abuse
Prescription drug addiction is second to only to marijuana addiction. Prescription drugs are abused more than other drugs such as methamphetamine, heroin, or cocaine. An estimated twenty percent of all individuals in the United States have some form of prescription drug addiction.
Today I am going to talk about prescription painkiller addiction and give those who want to stop using prescription drugs some alternatives to overcome prescription drug addiction. It has been my experience that any addict can stop using drugs, lose the desire to use them, and find a new way to live without any mind altering substances. Keep in mind that this means you too!!
Prescription painkiller addiction and our youth
Some prescription drugs that can become addicting when used other than they were prescribed include sedatives and tranquilizers like, stimulants like painkillers.
Almost forty-three percent of hospital emergency admissions were due to prescription drug abuse in 2000 that is almost 500,000 people. With the increased availability of these drugs the abuse of them is steadily rising. Many online pharmacies let people buy prescription drugs without a prescription and are sold even to minors.
Many young people think that prescription drugs are safer to use than street drugs this may be true to a small degree. Some prescription drugs that can become addicting when used other than they were prescribed include sedatives and tranquilizers like Xanax or Valium, stimulants like Adderall, Dexedrine, or Ritalin and narcotic painkillers like Vicodin or OxyContin.
People who obtain prescription drugs legitimately from their physician usually do not lock them up or throw them away when they don't need them anymore. This makes these drugs an easy target for misuse and even theft for anyone including are youths. With them being so young and nieve it is no wonder that they wind up with a prescription painkiller addiction.

Prescription drug abuse is on the rise
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration the abuse of prescription drugs grew from 400,000 in the mid 1980's to a whopping two million in 2000. Between 1999 and 2000 alone the abuse of tranquilizers, which are used to treat tension and anxiety increased almost fifty percent.
People who are prescribed medications for things like blood pressure or cholesterol on a daily basis it becomes easier to take other drugs that can be addicting such as prescription sleep aids, and narcotic pain killers. Mixing these drugs can cause interactions that can be fatal especially when they are used in ways other than they were prescribed.
In my opinion I really believe that prescription painkillers are being over prescribed at an alarming rate. I mean if you happen to get a minor injury and go to your doctor or ER they are quick to right a prescription for a drug like vicodin or another similar drug which contains hydrocodone. I most cases they could have been prescribed something like Motrin and Tylenol.
Another reason for the rise is that drugs like this are very easy to buy on the internet. Countries like India produce them in mass quantities and with the average income of the people at little to nothing they are only to happen to set up websites to sell them. I am not sure how legal it is to purchase these drugs over the net but I am guessing that in most cases it is illegal. So if you are doing this you could be arrested for it. Just something you may want to think about but if you are to this point probably the only thing you are worried about is the getting and using of one more drug.
The dangers of prescription drug addiction
How to stop painkiller addiction
One reagson prescription drug addiction is on the rise is that doctors are over prescribing painkiller medications. In a lot of cases the patient may have been able to deal successfully with their pain using a combination of Motrin and Tylenol but their physician prescribed them a narcotic pain medication instead and the end result of this was a painkiller addiction.
Another observation of mine is the increase in are youths becoming addicted to drugs like vicodin and many other opiate based drugs. They have learned that they can obtain these medications in their family and friends medicine chest.
This is a shame and could have been prevented had the parents been responsible and put their medications under lock and key. I hope every one who reads this will do so whether you have children of your own or not. One can never be to safe when it comes to these types of drugs.
Good luck
